I Am Legend starring Will Smith, currently at the Randwick Ritz, is an impressive survival story set in the not too distant future. Will Smith plays the role of a lonely survivor whose days are spent hunting the empty and ruined streets of New York looking for food and fellow survivors. At night he is forced to live inside his well fortified house as evil can be heard howling all around. He struggles with devastating loneliness, continues his work as a military scientist in trying to find a cure to the illness that has gripped the world.

There are a number of impressive elements in this film. The film makers allow the nocturnal threat to gradually be revealed: initially as no more than shrieks heard in the night and reflected in the obvious fear of Smith's character. This gradual revelation through the reactions of Smith, the obvious terror associated with dark spaces and the gradually unfolding background story explaining what went wrong, creates great tension for the audience. Some initial scenes had the same degree of anticipatory tension as experienced so many years ago in the first viewing of Alien.

Visually this film is stunning in presenting a near deserted New York which offers a sense of realistic ruination in a series of familiar locations. There are countless details which tell the story of what a person might do if they were the only survivor in a city or possibly in all the world. This is certainly a film to see on the big screen rather than waiting for it to come out on DVD. It is scary and intriguing. Will Smith excels in his role.

RATING:  (OUT OF A MAXIMUM FIVE)

Though for authenticity the emoticons should have a slight hint of fear and trepidation.
