Newsletter from Climate Action Coogee (CAC)

Written by local CAC member Suzette Rodoreda

I know CAC is a non-politically aligned group but I can't resist wishing everyone a happy post-Howard era! Even some life-long members of the Liberal Party have acknowledged that Howard has had his head in the sand about climate change  so hopefully this massive swing around will convince the new government that people are concerned about this issue and they will have to act on it to maintain our trust.

I just want to say congratulations to everyone in Climate Action Coogee – we were partly responsible for this result. All our hard-work over the last year has definitely raised the level of awareness of climate change amongst people in our local area and politicians, both local and country-wide.

So in honour of that, we have chosen to give ourselves a holiday……well sort of! We won't have another CAC-wide meeting until the last weekend in January but at the meeting on Sunday, we discussed a few things that we will have sub-committee meetings for:

The Bill – With a new change in government it's time to get out there again and continue promoting our Federal Climate Protection Bill since I suspect the new government will be looking for some progressive acts to make their mark! We would like to have a meeting about our strategy for disseminating the Bill in approximately 2 weeks time but the date and venue will be advised. Keep in touch if you'd like to come to this meeting

You've Got the Power – our education programme is going to travel to Canberra! We've been invited to give our school presentation to a few high-schools and primary schools in Canberra next year and we will have a meeting to organise this on Monday 7th January 2008 at Sasha's house – 6/18 Botany st Randwick

Deep Ecology Workshop – Jacquie is organising this specifically for Climate Action Coogee. This is a really exciting and amazing way to connect with nature and to rethink our place as being a part of nature not apart from it! The presenters rely on donations so the amount you give will be up to you. We are organising it for Saturday Jan 12th. It will most likely be held at Sasha's house 6/18 Botany st Randwick. If you want to know more about what Deep Ecology is, read the definition below.

T-shirts – Some good news here – they are going to be cheaper than we originally thought ($25, not $30), however in order to keep the cost down, we have chosen a green colour rather than a black T-shirt. This will also work better in the hot sun, which we often end up being in! For those of you that have ordered, we will organise shirts for you. Anyone else who wants one, please notify Jacquie at this email address and she can order you one.

Venue – thanks to Randwick council for offering us the use of their Sustainable House in Clovelly for our meetings however the location is not ideal for those of us who don't have cars and we probably have very limited time in terms of being able to show people around the house. I'd like to organise a look at the house for future reference though and to promote it to our members as an excellent model of sustainable city living! We will keep this generous offer in mind but in the meantime we are going to trial Coogee RSL. Locals will have to become members but this will only be in the order of $5-$10 per year.

Leafletting - thankyou to everyone who handed out the leaflets in the Wentworth electorate prior to the election. Turnbull has held onto the seat there but I'm sure he has received the message that people in his seat want action on climate change.

Support online petition for action - A few people from LIVE have helped set up an online petition to be presented to the Commonwealth Government/Senate mid next year. The WUACC (Women for Urgent Action on the Climate Crisis) petition has been established by women, but is a vehicle open and welcoming to all supportive Australians.

WUACC PETITION: WUACC Please pass on!!

We have chosen to drive this petition through women, as women are under-represented in our nation's parliaments and board rooms where decisions regarding climate change policy are being made but clearly not in our best interests.
The petition is based on a 10 point plan for action by government - not intended to be definitive but to be amenable to wide support and likely to encourage our new MPs to take urgent action.

7 Steps to Sustainability - For people of faith communities interested in moving towards a sustainable future within your place of worship and amongst your community, please have a look at the guide on the following website:

Life Saving Energy - the formation of a human sign at 9.30am Sunday 2 December 2007 in Manly, North Steyne Beach
Life Saving Energy is an initiative of Clean Energy for Eternity to get every surf club in Australia fitted out with renewable energy. Surf clubs are an iconic part of Australian culture, are run by community minded people, and are on the front line when it comes to climate change. With rising sea levels, they will be the first organisation to go under. Watch out for or get involved with a launch in your area (with apologies to inland Climate Action Groups :-) )!
See the YouTube video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1P5OvQaRvU for more details, and spread the word. Tell all your family, friends and colleagues.
Don't forget to register at lifesavingenergy@gmail.com

Coal Train Blockade - for those of you who didn't hear, Rising Tide Newcastle blockaded a coal train prior to the election to send a clear message that coal is going to kill us. See the media release below the Deep Ecology definition.

Have a great Christmas break everyone and I look forward to an inspiring new year for seeing government action on climate change!
Cheers,
Suzette

Deep ecology

Deep ecology is a recent branch of ecological philosophy (ecosophy) that considers humankind an integral part of its environment. Deep ecology places greater value on non-human species, ecosystems and processes in nature than established environmental and green movements. Deep ecology has led to a new system of environmental ethics. The core principle of deep ecology as originally developed is Næss's doctrine of biospheric egalitarianism — the claim that all living things have the same right to live and flourish. Deep ecology describes itself as "deep" because it is concerned with fundamental philosophical questions about the role of human life as one part of the ecosphere, rather than with a narrow view of ecology as a branch of biological science, and aims to avoid merely utilitarian environmentalism.
